Irish Moiled Cattle are one of the rarest cattle breeds in the
world. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust have monitored their recovery
from a spell when there were only around 20 breeding females and
can now declare in excess of 400 due to the commitment from them
and dedicated breeders.
They are a native Irish breed, and are distinctive due to their
white line or flinching that is down the middle of their back. The
name Moiled or Mael means dome and refers to the shape of the top-notch
area of the head where they do not have horns.
The Springfield herd is one o the best known in the British Isles
having been directly responsible for the formation of at least another
twenty herds throughout the Country. The Herd was founded in 1987
with the purchase of two young heifers Argory Eva and Argory Ethel.
These females had a profound impact within the herd and their descendents
remain to the forefront of the breed.
